In Sickness and Old Age

Having cows for their whole lives will bring about experiences with all the natural aspects of life such as illness or disease, old age and eventually death. These are parts of the Cow Protection farming system that should be attended to well and properly facilitated.

When the cows get sick their medical needs will be attended to with care and concern. You will have your own good veterinarian who understands the special way you are caring for the cows and he/she will support your endeavor with sound advice, good medicine and probably pain killers when required. A Cow Protected will not be euthanized by poison but on the contrary it will be cared for thoroughly with all its troubles reduced as far as possible so there is no difficulty.

When the cows get near the end of their lives there will most likely be a period of being down where closer attention will be needed to dress any bed sores and turn them regularly. You can turn a cow over its belly onto its other side but this will generally take two or three persons. If you have assistants then this will be fine however it is more probably that you would have an overhead crane hoist of some sort so the adult cow or bull can be lifted easily by one person. In addition to the hoist you will need appropriate strapping and a frame to hold the straps so the cows can be lifted comfortably and safely.

In the lifelong plans for the herd the additional medical requirements must be factored in and properly accounted for. The milk and ox powered products will need to priced to take into account this part of the animal husbandry arrangements.
