Training a skittish 7 year old ox

Train a spirited 6 year old ox (henry)….Well that is the plan. For him it means linking with a trained one and off he goes. First couple of sessions involved him being tied up (he was not used to that), next put a yoke on him next to another. he wanted to poke them but he could not reach through the yoke distance. Next stage take him for his first walk. We partnered him with a semi trained ox (Bala) with the thought that his passion would be balanced off by his sober colleague. Started off well….but then he decided he did not like being driven by a person from behind so he started to spin round to see who was behind him. Next thing you know the driver drops the driving reins and the two of them take off down the field….until they found a hedge and ran into it. A bit of untangling of ropes by use of a knife and we were back on track. Next thing he reminded himself that he does not like being driven by a person he cant see directly so he tries to turn around and lo and behold the yoke flips…. End of the training session. Next session I will partner him with a more dominant ox who he is junior to. Perseverance, persistence firmness and kindness. He does not know yet how much fun he is going to have as a trained ox. Henry is the Black and white one.
